Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Martinsville, Illinois. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing with centers available nationwide, ready for your needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance testing in recent years. Many professionals, such as employers, courts, and Substance Abuse counselors opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by companies with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probation services. The key advantage of hair follicle analysis is its extended detection period up to 90 days. Collected through observed procedures, it is almost foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair possesses the ability to retain a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered from near the scalp, the hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the foundational processing of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This process involves verifying the integrity and proper shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, a screen that returns positive must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that show presumptive positives from screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming a positive screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample that shows a presumptive positive undergoes a cleansing process ahead of confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, which enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: A period of roughly 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and unique hair growth factors can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to drug testing in Martinsville, IL, hair follicle tests offer significant advantages over traditional urine tests. The superior detection capability of hair testing ensures that substances used in the past 90 days are identified accurately, a feat not achievable with urine tests. This extended detection window provides employers and professionals with a broader perspective on an individual's substance use history.

Reliability is another major factor favoring hair testing. Unlike urine samples, which can be tampered with easily, hair tests offer near-certain results. This method is ideal for organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, ensuring clear and accurate policy adherence checks.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Martinsville, IL, is its extended detection window. These tests screen for substances over a period of up to 90 days, offering a much broader insight into an individual’s drug use history. This capability allows employers to gain a comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee’s past behavior.

From an employer’s perspective, this long detection window is invaluable. It helps ensure candidates meet the necessary drug-free workplace standards, providing a clear picture of an individual’s behavior over recent months, thus supporting more informed decision-making in hiring or monitoring employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Martinsville, IL, is notably tamper-resistant, significantly reducing the risk of sample alteration compared to other methods like urine testing. The process of acquiring samples is overseen in a controlled environment, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the sample collected.

This testing method provides highly reliable and unquestionable results, which is vital for maintaining the trustworthiness of the testing process. Therefore, organizations seeking certainty in drug testing will appreciate the security that hair follicle tests provide against any potential tampering or fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
