Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Martinton, Illinois. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our experts in hair testing have centers nationwide, ready to conduct these analyses. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other needs.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted to hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, courts, and individuals on probation turn to hair follicle testing. Its key advantage is a longer detection window for drug use, usually up to 90 days, observed under strict conditions, and nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain the most effective option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are increasingly recognized as a robust approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the evolving hair strand. Upon collection near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair might be used. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data inputs absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed with techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and its accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to fake: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, increasing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over duration, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
