In Maunie, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you require hair analysis for drug or alcohol presence, we specialize in this testing method, with centers nationwide ready to assist. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary from the head or other body areas. Hair testing caters to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and broader tailored testing solutions.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are supplanting traditional methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse expertise favor hair tests over conventional urine analysis. This choice is common among organizations upholding strict drug-free policies. Hair testing's advantage lies in its extended detection span, reaching up to 90 days, and its resistance to tampering, eclipsing the effectiveness of urine tests for recent usage under 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. This method is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A sample length of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional parameters, and/or analysis exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be sourced. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation are the four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result.

Accessioning pertains to the initial input of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes certifying that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening serves as a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples; however, any positive screen needs corroboration to be legally acceptable. Samples indicated as presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

A sample presumed positive in the Screening phase leads to more hair being taken from the original sample and made ready for Extraction. Within this step, drugs are separated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to undertake.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire lab workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical information: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than alternate testing methods.
  • Result inconsistency: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as “hair follicle tests,” the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
