In McCormick, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, with facilities all across the United States capable of conducting such tests. Hair from the crown or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches long, is typically sufficient. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are indispensable for zero-tolerance employers, legal scenarios, and individuals under probation. A significant advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, along with an observed collection that makes tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the hair's fibrous structure as it grows. Collected near the scalp, it can present a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg, which is an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is recommended. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair comprises any other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing process encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the process by integrating a sample into the laboratory's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although it's an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methods to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the ISO / IEC 17025 standards for accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly in comparison to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in McCormick, IL stands out for its superior detection abilities compared to urine tests. Hair samples can reveal drug use history over a much more prolonged period, offering a more reliable and comprehensive view of an individual's substance use. This method's accuracy makes it a preferred choice for employers and legal authorities seeking thorough evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

McCormick, IL employers favor hair follicle testing for its extended detection window, revealing drug use over up to 90 days. This extensive timeframe enables employers to gain a more comprehensive understanding of a candidate or employee's substance use history. The lengthy observation period is vital for maintaining a safe and responsible work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in McCormick, IL provide a tamper-resistant method for drug screening. Unlike other testing procedures, hair tests significantly minimize the risk of sample adulteration, thereby ensuring reliable and irrefutable outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
