Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Medora, Illinois. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we have specialized centers located in every major city across the nation to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or body hair may be used. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to your specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common choice in recent years. More employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse professionals now mandate this method over the traditional urine test. Preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies and for probationary supervision, these tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days. Hair tests are collected under observation, making them virtually cheat-proof, while urine tests remain more reliable for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended timeline of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab process of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data recording not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift screening for drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive result must be corroborated to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumed positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is suggested to be positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is collected from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is managed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All assumed positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests are able to find drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Deceiving a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Yields historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become visible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand instead of the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Medora, IL When considering the benefits of hair testing over urine tests, one primary factor stands out: accuracy. Hair follicle tests can detect a broader range of substances and offer a longer detection window, allowing employers to assess drug use history with greater reliability than traditional urine tests, which only capture short-term use.

Hair testing provides unparalleled detection of drug use behaviors over a more extended timeline, up to 90 days. In contrast, urine tests have a limited detection period, making them less effective for ongoing substance use evaluation. This superior depth in detection makes hair tests a more favorable option for employers who prioritize comprehensive substance use oversight.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Medora, IL Hair follicle tests are renowned for their long detection window. By assessing drug use over a period of up to 90 days, these tests provide a detailed view of an individual’s substance use history, invaluable for employers. This extension far surpasses traditional testing methods, granting a superior perspective on employee habits.

This broader detection capability empowers employers in Medora, IL to make more informed hiring and retention decisions. By understanding patterns over an extended period, organizations can better evaluate potential risks associated with drug use, ensuring a safer and more productive workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
