Providing comprehensive drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle testing in Metamora, Illinois. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers across the nation can conduct these tests with precision. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. The hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized needs.

In recent times, the preference for using hair follicle tests in drug screening has risen. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair drug tests appeal to employers with strict drug policies, probation services, and courts due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, reliability in a watched collection process, and resistance to manipulation. However, for identifying drug use within the previous five days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair furnishes a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and managing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that appear presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a narrower detection window.
  • Challenge to cheat: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides temporal data: It can supply a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test particularly examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Metamora, IL, the advantages of hair follicle over urine testing are evident. Hair tests provide a longer detection period, identifying substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests. This makes hair testing a preferred choice for employers and legal entities.

Comparing hair and urine tests, hair tests emerge as more reliable due to their comprehensive detection window and complexity in terms of adulteration, providing a robust alternative for substance abuse assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Metamora, IL benefit greatly from the extended detection window of hair tests. These tests can detect drug use up to 90 days prior, providing a broad view of an individual’s substance use history, facilitating informed management decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
