Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Mettawa, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair testing with locations across the nation ready to administer hair tests. Typically, you need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, or body hair can be used. Our hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly seen hair follicle tests emerging as a preferred method. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine sampling. Hair follicle tests are vital for employers upholding no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. Their primary benefit is the extended detection span of up to 90 days, monitored via an observed collection process, which is notably challenging to compromise. However, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations are increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands serve as a historical record of alcohol and drug usage, encapsulating biomarkers within their growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's girth) from the scalp produces 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for verification. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When specifying head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four critical phases are part of the lab processing for a drug testing outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the laboratory system. This encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary investigation for abuse substances. While cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified for court compatibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening require secondary validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a washing procedure before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify substance use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Minimal tamperability: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Chronicling usage: It outlines a history of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection: It requires about 5-7 days before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Mettawa, IL, reveals distinct advantages. Hair testing offers superior detection over more extended periods, while urine tests are limited by shorter detection windows. Hair tests also excel in reliability, minimizing risks of adulteration, making them a preferred choice for accurate substance detection in professional settings.

Extended Detection Window

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Mettawa, IL, stand out as a robust method due to their resistance to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
