Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mineral, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across the nation to facilitate it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair testing over regular urine tests. These tests are used by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for individuals on probation. The key advantage is the extended detection window—up to 90 days—in a tamper-proof process, nearly eliminating chances of cheating. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a record keeper for alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is clipped close to the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol presence over a timeframe of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

An ideal hair test requires a 1.5-inch segment from around 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, totaling 100mg of hair for analysis. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in laboratory drug test result processing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where samples enter the lab's system. Tasks here include ensuring samples are properly sealed and sent, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data omissions not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening follows with a rapid check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to preliminarily assess most samples, those with positive results need confirmation for legal use. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives from Screening, additional hair is taken from the sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are pulled from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of initial positive results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is performed in line with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug screening can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a limited detection span.
  • Challenging to bypass: Hair testing is hard to evade, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot confirm recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair coloration and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that gets analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
