Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Mitchell, Illinois. If a hair test for substances or alcohol is essential, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with testing facilities in every major city across the nation, ready to conduct the assessments. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be sampled. Hair assessments are applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests instead of typical urine tests. Firms with strict drug-free policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation utilize these tests. The key advantage of hair tests is the extensive drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with direct supervision, making evasion practically impossible. Yet, for drug usage in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil's width), collected closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for courtroom admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a confirmatory test.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening finding is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine testing offers a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can show a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
