In Modesto, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. This reliable service offers hair drug or alcohol testing, with nationwide centers ready to conduct these tests. Typically, a hair sample from the crown of your head, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches, is used. Hair tests are thorough, offering analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become more common in drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method benefits zero-tolerance workplaces, legal environments, and those on probation, due to its prolonged drug detection window of up to 90 days, secured through observed collection, and is virtually impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most effective for detecting very recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands' fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug history. When taken near the scalp, hair is capable of providing up to a three-month detection timeline for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A sample size of 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For tests like EtG and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp offerings, while body hair includes all other sorts (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial stage of integrating a sample into the lab’s processes. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any presumptively positive results from Screening are subjected to a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The test often called "hair follicle tests" assesses the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
