Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Located in Mount Erie, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is unmatched, with centers nationwide ready to conduct hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various personalized hair testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair tests. A major advantage is the longer detection period, extending up to 90 days, with an observed sample collection that significantly reduces tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of about 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with the sample is relatively hard, and it’s convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For testing EtG, additional panels, or exams exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. It’s advised to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, in contrast to body hair, which includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential phases in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing stage where a sample is entered into the lab system. This phase involves verifying the sample's sealed and shipped condition, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a swift initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples showing a presumptive positive in screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. This phase separates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluids, presenting hair drug testing as a more challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely hard to tamper with a hair drug test, making results more reliable.
  • Historical data provision: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
