In Naplate, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When hair or alcohol testing is required, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair analyses, with testing facilities available nationwide. A supply of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally necessary. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

The utilization of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years. Various employers, judicial organizations, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug testing as opposed to conventional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation benefit from hair tests. Key advantages include an extended detection period of up to 90 days and observed sample collection, minimizing the potential for cheating. However, for drug detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as the hair grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage over about a 3-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair piece, comprising around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair is a substitute. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair signifies all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase where a sample enters the laboratory's system. This phase ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any necessary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial examination for substances of abuse. Though Screening cost-effectively removes most samples as negative for drug use, any positive results must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples deemed potentially positive during Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptive positives identified during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive is cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug intake up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in falsifying hair drug tests enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and unique hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
