In Nason, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise lies in conducting hair-based tests for drugs or alcohol, and we maintain a network of testing centers across all cities Nationwide. Generally, hair samples can be collected from the crown or the body if 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Various options are available for drug, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing through hair samples.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common. Organizations such as employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer them over traditional urine tests. These tests are optimal for those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, both in professional settings and legal environments. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended 90-day detection window. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for spotting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal use over approximately a 3-month span for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings that involve more than 10 panels, a 150mg hair sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a specimen into the lab’s system, confirming it was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial, rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair in lesser quantities than seen in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most intricate to conduct.

Positive Screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug exams can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover shorter durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very hard to falsify, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers past usage trends: It can show drug use patterns over a time frame, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal immediate use: Drugs become noticeable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
