Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Nauvoo, Illinois. If you require drug or alcohol testing via hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area, with centers across the U.S. available for hair testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. These tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can include other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug testing procedures. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation monitors favor hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests are still preferred for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a roughly 3-month period of substance detection for both alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Providing a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount from body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically relates to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This process checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, any sample with a positive result requires confirmation for court submission. Any samples that exhibit a positive result during Screening need further confirmation.

For samples testing positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any samples presumed positive are washed appropriately. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It allows the detection of a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
