Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Athens, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing provides specialized hair testing at multiple locations in every city across the Nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for testing. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as the go-to method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts often favor it over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, probationary terms, or court directives often require hair drug tests. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days and are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring integrity in results. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent (within 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This procedure includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening demand a further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
