Offering thorough hair follicle drug testing services in New Holland, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive results. Specializing in these tests, we have facilities across all cities in the nation capable of conducting them. To proceed, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair usually suffices. Hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has surged as the preferred method for drug testing over traditional avenues. Employers, judicial systems, and substance professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over urine analyses. Such tests appeal to those with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their main advantage is the extended 90-day detection capability, with an innate resistance to manipulation. Yet, urine tests maintain higher accuracy for last-five-day screenings.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting the consumption of substances and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide an insight into alcohol and drug use over nearly a three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (matching the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, ideal for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of interest. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug presence in most samples, positive screenings must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample screens preliminarily positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most intricate technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceptionally challenging to fraud a hair test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It demonstrates a consumption pattern over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Even though they're sometimes termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
