Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in New Milford, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair follicle testing, combined with our nationwide centers, ensures you receive the assistance you require. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair specimens are capable of being examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more customized tests.

Recently, the inclusion of hair follicle testing in drug test processes has become more widespread. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts often mandate hair analysis over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, alongside judicial systems and probation users, benefit significantly. The foremost advantage of hair drug screening is its extensive drug detection window, often up to 90 days, along with tamper-resistant collection.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures and secures biomarkers within the strands, offering extensive historical data on alcohol and drug use. When sourced near the scalp, hair provides an estimated 3-month detection period for these substances. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches length consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) taken nearest to the scalp can weigh 100mg, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, extras, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. In the context of head hair, it refers strictly to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional information entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economically advantageous for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires validation for legal admissibility. Samples that are provisionally positive after Screening necessitate a further confirmation.

In instances where a sample shows a presumptively positive outcome during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other practices such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Necessary presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and follows the accreditation concerning ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Information on usage patterns: It discloses a usage pattern over a timeline, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
