Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Nilwood, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available in every city nationwide to perform the test. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or use body hair if needed. Hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing requirements.

In recent times, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has been rising. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists are introducing hair drug testing over the usual urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals increasingly rely on hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, which often stretches up to 90 days. This observed collection process is challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month detection period for these substances. It's easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of logging a sample into a laboratory’s records. It includes ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and entering any supplementary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a prompt assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs validation to be acceptable in court. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methods to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to cheat: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nilwood, IL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing by offering extended detection accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
