Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle analysis in Nora, Illinois. For those in need of alcohol or drug screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based evaluations and has facilities in every city across the country. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing.

There has been a rise in using hair follicle drug tests in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance toward drug use, courts, and probation officers notably use hair follicle assessments. A major advantage of this method is its longer detection span of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to alter. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps associated with laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system, which involves verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug assessment, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not just the most recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
