At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Glen Ellyn, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this testing method and have facilities nationwide. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair may also be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred method among many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as opposed to standard urine tests. Such tests are popular with employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, collected through a supervised collection, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds historical information on alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When taken near the scalp's surface, hair can furnish a detection window for up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, fairly tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample amount for both screening and verifying results. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair refers to any other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial phase of inputting a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening conducts a preliminary quick examination for drugs associated with abuse. Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, but a positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to different methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging approach to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing reveals drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection span.
  • Cheat resistance: Cheating in a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time, not just short-term use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in North Glen Ellyn, IL, the former's superior detection accuracy shines through. Hair testing offers a broader detection window, thus giving a more reliable portrayal of past drug use. In contrast to urine tests, hair tests reduce the chances of recent consumption remaining undetected, reinforcing their role as the more trustworthy option.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a remarkable detection window, up to 90 days, giving employers in North Glen Ellyn, IL a detailed insight into an individual's substance use history. Such an extensive look-back period equips employers with the necessary information to make informed decisions, far surpassing the detection capabilities of standard drug tests, which usually cover brief time frames.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

With its notable resistance to tampering, hair follicle testing in North Glen Ellyn, IL provides unsurpassed reliability. This testing method significantly reduces the potential for sample adulteration, offering clear and definite results. This uncompromising accuracy protects organizations against manipulation and ensures that test outcomes remain undisputed and genuine.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
