In Oakley, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing. Our centers across the nation are equipped to conduct these tests, specializing in hair-based assessments for drugs and alcohol. Typically, hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required for testing, which includes customizable options.

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug detection. Many workplaces, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over urine tests, due to its zero-tolerance enforcement. Hair tests are valued for their longer detection span up to 90 days, providing an observed sample collection method that is hard to tamper with, though urine tests remain valid for detecting substances used in recent days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair acts as a repository for a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and can be conveniently shipped.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the breadth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or test panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair is considered suitable. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The principal segments in processing a lab drug test involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial sample input into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample's seals and shipment were managed correctly, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing further data input that an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t cover.

Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is economically advantageous to confirm the absence of drug use across most samples, a positive result from Screening necessitates confirmation to hold up in legal contexts. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening demand further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and arranged for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations when compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every sample with presumptive positives is cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeline: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with their limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: It can unveil a drug usage trend over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It usually takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
