In Olmsted, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing facilities across the nation capable of conducting such assessments. Hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body can be utilized in the majority of circumstances. Analyses may include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle screens more commonly. Various employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. This method is favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationers due to its longer drug use detection span, typically reaching up to 90 days, verified through an observed procedure, making deception nearly impossible. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers an approximate three-month detection period for substances such as alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, fairly tamper-proof, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and verification purposes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or extensive panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair could serve as a substitute. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result consists of four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial step of inputting the specimen into the lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and incorporating any missing data not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further validation.

If a specimen tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are separated from the hair at concentrations substantially lower than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), presenting the most challenging form of drug testing.

Any screening result requiring Confirmation is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screens can disclose drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine screenings which provide a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers past data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair may vary due to hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, excluding the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
