Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Olympia Fields, Illinois. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol assessments, we provide numerous testing centers Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allow for other tailor-made hair testing services.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug screening. Employers, judiciary centers, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair over urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, the courts, and probation officers favor these tests as they detect drug use over a typically longer duration of up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are near-impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most precise for drug consumption within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand’s fibers. When gathered near the scalp, it offers an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively hard, and it is uncomplicated to ship.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch hair sample, equivalent in size to a #2 pencil from the scalp, provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is recommended. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equal volume of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies initially registering a sample within a lab’s system. It encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it’s a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is separated from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at comparatively lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It elucidates a drug use pattern across time, rather than reflecting just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand directly, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
