Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Omaha, Illinois. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the Nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or other body parts is necessary. These tests can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke hair testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug testing. Various employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer these over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals on probation. Their significant advantage is detecting drug use over a longer period—up to 90 days. The tests are collected under supervision, minimizing cheating possibilities. However, urine tests remain more precise for drug use detected within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method to uncover alcohol and drug consumption. The hair retains a history of various substances by encapsulating biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair analysis can offer a potential 3-month window of detection for substances like alcohol. Its collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp equates to 100mg, which is considered optimal for screening and validating results. For EtG, enhancements, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar measure of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially integrated into a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating positive during Screening undergo a secondary confirmation process.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample testing positive undergoes a wash before confirmation as warranted. The whole laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter period of detection.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in falsifying hair drug tests leads to more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair drug testing can reveal a drug use pattern, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this testing examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
