Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Oneida, Illinois. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides services in nationwide centers with the capacity for hair evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various substances.

Recently, drug detection methods often include hair follicle analyses. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts demand hair tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with observed collection processes reducing cheating potential. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption, offering extended insight by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect a roughly 3-month detection span for substances like alcohol. It is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to courier.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's width) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG tests, additional screenings, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair alone, while body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s database. This process incorporates ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were correct, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening focuses on an initial fast review for substances of abuse. Though Screening efficiently rules out drug presence on most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be legally permissible. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening do need subsequent verification.

For samples flagged as presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting substances from hair at a lower concentration than found in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), showcasing hair drug screening as a more intricate procedure to perform.

A GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technique verifies any positive screening outcome. All samples with potential positive results are cleansed before validation as warranted. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter spans.
  • Hard to falsify: The rigor of hair drug tests enhances result precision, making them harder to manipulate.
  • Chronic use insights: This method furnishes a timeline of drug usage over a duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incipient use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments are pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variance: Factors like hair pigmentation and personal growth patterns can sway the metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is frequently used, however, the test itself examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
