Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Opdyke, Illinois. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialization in this testing ensures reliable results, with centers Nationwide performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is needed. Drugs and alcohol, along with tailored options, can be detected through hair analysis.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the classic urine test now. This method, favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, offers extended detection of drug use up to 90 days and is nearly impossible to manipulate, though urine tests remain more effective for recent drug detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe of alcohol and drug identification. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both preliminary and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional analysis, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The key phases in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit substances. While it is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, any positive indication from this phase needs validation to be legally accepted. Samples preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If during Screening a sample tests positive, additional hair is sourced from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves isolating drugs from hair at far lower concentrations than other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening among the most intricate testing approaches.

All positive indications from screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to final confirmation if necessary. The entire series of operations from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres both to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • A lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which show a smaller detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceptionally hard to tamper with a hair drug test, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers past usage insights: It can display a trend of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not reveal recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the scalp-located hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
