Accredited Drug Testing facilitates comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oquawka, Illinois. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, we at Accredited Drug Testing specialize in hair assessments and operate testing centers nationwide, enabling performance of the hair test across all major cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing requests.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. A variety of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers adopting zero-tolerance policies for drug use, the court systems, and individuals on probation frequently utilize hair follicle drug tests. An essential advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended drug use detection period, often up to 90 days. The observed collection process ensures that it's nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Due to the biomarkers getting trapped in the fibers of growing hair, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample initially enters the laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any other data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economical in ruling out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening do need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration compared to urine or oral fluid methodologies, making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more accurate findings.
  • Provides historical data: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become visible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug test methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences might impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
