Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oregon, Illinois. When in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert, providing facilities across the nation equipped to administer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Hair samples can be evaluated for various substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method for substance screening. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. This method is ideal for employers with strict drug-free policies, court-ordered testing, and probation checks due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and minimal risk of cheating. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, it can reflect up to a three-month period for detecting substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The core steps in processing a drug test laboratory result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial process of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means of excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples indicating a positive result during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timespan.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides timeline data: It reveals a history of drug use over a time frame, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine drug tests, hair testing holds a marked advantage, particularly in Oregon, IL. It delivers unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests primarily detect recent drug use, hair tests provide a more extensive assessment, identifying substance use over an extended period. The imposing accuracy makes hair testing a top choice for those prioritizing reliability.

Hair follicle tests demonstrate significant improvements over traditional urine testing in Oregon, IL. With an extended detection window and increased reliability, these tests effectively trace substance consumption and offer a broader understanding of an individual’s drug use than urinary tests can reveal.

Extended Detection Window

The expansive detection window for hair follicle testing in Oregon, IL can be up to 90 days, far surpassing typical urine tests. This longer period renders a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use, providing employers with an extensive evaluation of an applicant or employee's historical drug use.

By embracing this extensive detection period, hair follicle testing in Oregon, IL enables employers to conduct thorough evaluations of substance history. The 90-day window aids in acquiring a complete understanding of drug use, effectively informing hiring decisions and maintaining drug-free workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Oregon, IL shows a robust resistance against sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are far less susceptible to adulteration or substitution, resulting in more dependable and verifiable outcomes, thus upholding the accuracy and integrity of the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
