Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive drug assessments using hair samples in Orient, Illinois. Whether it's a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with locations across all cities nationwide to serve you. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. We offer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In the past few years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests has surged. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers who advocate zero-tolerance for drug use, courts, and probationary conditions now commonly require hair tests. The major advantage of hair tests is the extended detection of drug use, which can be up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, making it very hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers over time, offering a historical account of drug and alcohol use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for up to roughly 90 days. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's width) near the scalp yields roughly 100mg, optimal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is recommended. Employ a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair may be utilized. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test's lab process encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating the sample into the lab system, which involves confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entry not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient for clearing most samples, only confirmed positive results are legally valid, necessitating secondary confirmation for any presumptively positive findings.

For presumptively positive samples during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm positive screening outcomes. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positives undergo washing if necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter timelines.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test proves challenging, ensuring higher result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical trends: Offers a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair following approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams are typically pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair pigmentation and growth rate might influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Its superior detection capability captures substance use over longer periods, making it a reliable method in Orient, IL. While urine tests are limited to detecting recent use, hair tests provide a broader historical perspective, ensuring enhanced accuracy in identifying regular or sporadic drug use cases.

Extended Detection Window

One of the notable benefits of hair follicle tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This trait offers employers in Orient, IL invaluable insight into an individual's consistent vs. occasional substance use habits. Such comprehensive detection provides a reliable profile of substance use, assisting in more informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests offer significant resistance against tampering. In Orient, IL, these tests minimize the risk of sample alteration, ensuring authentic results. The method's design has built-in safeguards against common tampering methods, thus providing unquestionable reliability and trust in the data obtained, enhancing security and compliance measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
