Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing across Orion, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in hair analysis, with facilities across cities Nationwide capable of executing such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is required or alternatively body hair can be used. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

The past few years have seen an increase in the use of hair follicle drug testing for substance analysis. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it over the typical urine examination. It's a favored choice among employers imposing strict no-drug policies, judicial institutions, and people under probation. Major advantages of hair follicle testing are its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—its monitored sample collection, and its near-imperviousness to manipulation. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests still hold the edge in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drug usage by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other necessary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
