Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Osman, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities Nationwide for conducting hair tests. In most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Our hair tests can analyze substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored hair test solutions.

Recently, the preference for administering drug tests has leaned towards hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug-use rules, courts, and probationers favor hair follicle tests due to their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, reliability due to observed collection, and difficulty in manipulation. However, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by locking biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to approximately a three-month timeframe. It is straightforward to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands, akin to the width of a #2 pencil, nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen size for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, and/or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be procured. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory drug test processing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial reception of the sample into the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a quick, initial check for substance misuse. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated for legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Positive results from the Screening are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with tentative positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screening can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine testing, which offers a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug analysis is hard to deceive, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Supplies usage history: It shows a pattern of substance abuse over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is usually pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and unique differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
