In Parkersburg, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle testing services for both drug and alcohol usage. Our specialized hair testing centers, available in every city across the country, require a minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches. Whether from the crown of your head or elsewhere, hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or even personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for detecting drug use over the standard urine test, particularly among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals. This test is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies and those involved with probationary processes due to its extended detection timeline, which reveals drug use up to 90 days prior, its observed collection method making it tough to deceive. However, for recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the better option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection window of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect quantity for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It is beneficial to use a jeweler's scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively; body hair encompasses other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing drug test results in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This involves checking the sample's seal and proper shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic documentation system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires Confirmation to be legally valid. A secondary confirmation is mandatory for samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower amounts compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to alter, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: A hair test reveals a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to catch recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Disparities in outcomes: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
