In Pearl City, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialized services are available Nationwide, with centers in every city prepared to conduct such tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair, these tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other testing needs.

The trend towards hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests instead of conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers favor hair tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it nearly cheat-proof. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use (within the past 5 days), urine tests still hold an edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month period for detecting substances. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair implies scalp hair, while body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is processed into a lab's system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method for discounting drug usage on most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If there is a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than with other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can show drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Gives historical insights: Reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
