Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Percy, Illinois. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and boasts testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine samples. Businesses with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation programs rely on these tests for an extended drug use detection period, usually up to 90 days, and they feature an observed collection process, making them tough to fool. Yet, for recent use (last 5 days), urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the hair's rapidly growing fibers. Collected near the scalp, it can present up to roughly a three-month identification timeframe for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to falsify, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) at the scalp's proximity yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample weight is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a proportional quantity of body hair can be sourced. Mention of head hair relates exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative hair types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Summary

Four primary stages comprise the lab workflow for processing drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample first enters a laboratory’s system. The stage includes checking if the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that's not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is about a preliminary check for abusive drugs. While being economical to eliminate drug use in many samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples flagged as positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a positive Screening outcome, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than in other testing types (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if required. The full lab activity from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug analysis can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: Reflects a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Delayed recent use detection: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the test inspects the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
