Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug screening in Petersburg, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers across every city Nationwide to conduct hair tests. A typical necessity is having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair testing requirements.

Over the last few years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by organizations imposing strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probationers. The significant advantage is an extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, administered under supervision, with minimal risk of tampering. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable tool to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged account of alcohol and drugs by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the evolving hair strand. Captured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair signifies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The quartet of steps in processing a drug test in a lab includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves verifying the sample's sealing and correct shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any required data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift check for drug abuse. Though Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any presumptive positive samples in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears positive in Screening, more hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which presents challenges in performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is tough, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a record of drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
