Complete hair follicle drug testing services are available through Accredited Drug Testing in Phoenix, Illinois. Whether you require a hair alcohol or drug test, our nationwide centers excel in hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common drug testing method. Many organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer them to urine tests. These tests are favored where zero-tolerance drug policies apply, for court cases, and for probationary monitoring. Hair tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, are observed during collection, and are difficult to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where the sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This stage ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data required not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary check for drug use. While it’s an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples that show presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

For samples that show presumptively positive results in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive results is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over a period, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot pinpoint recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Phoenix, IL, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine testing. Its superior detection accuracy is one of the greatest benefits. While urine tests are commonly used, hair testing offers a more comprehensive result due to the extended detection window. By examining hair samples, the possibility of undetected substance use drastically decreases, offering peace of mind for employers.

The reliability of hair follicle tests is evident in how they detect subtle traces of substances that are often missed by standard urine tests. This ensures a more conclusive analysis, making it a favored option for those enforcing strict policies on substance usage. The ability to reflect long-term patterns is unmatched, providing a fuller picture of a person's habits.

Extended Detection Window

One of the notable advantages of hair follicle testing in Phoenix, IL, lies in its extended detection window. The ability to look back up to 90 days into an individual's substance use history provides employers with a comprehensive understanding of their employees or potential hires. This long-range data can be a critical factor in decision-making processes.

Through such a detailed retrospective analysis, businesses can better assess and maintain a drug-free environment. Unlike tests that only cover recent use, hair testing offers insight into consistent behaviors, aiding in the maintenance of high safety and performance standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Phoenix, IL, the integrity of drug testing is elevated by hair follicle methods, as they significantly reduce sample tampering risks. Providing reliable and unquestionable results, these tests circumvent common issues associated with urine samples, fostering trust in the testing process.

The innate difficulty in adulterating a hair sample ensures a clean and defensible testing method. This level of security is essential for environments with strict compliance needs, where accurate and trustworthy results are non-negotiable for maintaining operational integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
