Accredited Drug Testing caters comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois. Should you require a test for substances such as drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and boasts testing locations in cities nationwide capable of executing a hair examination. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is necessary; hair testing can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

In the past decade, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug examinations over classic urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection window spanning up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for drug use detection within the preceding five days, urine tests remain the predominant choice for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become widely recognized as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s workflow. This process includes confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days before drugs are noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform traditional urine tests in Prairie du Rocher, IL? Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
