Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services throughout Prairie Grove, Illinois. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in hair-based assessments and operate multiple centers nationwide. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests effectively screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized assessments.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over urine analysis. It is favored in zero-tolerance workplaces, court mandates, and probation monitoring due to its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, strict collection procedures, and resistance to tampering. For recent drug use detection within five days, however, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair, it offers an extended timeline of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and underarm hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into the lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substance abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positive findings in Screening must undergo further validation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening output utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to verification, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The superiority of hair testing over urine tests in Prairie Grove, IL, is evident. Hair samples capture a broader spectrum of substance intake over time, enhancing detection accuracy. Employers benefit greatly from this method as it provides a more complete assessment of potential drug use, unlike traditional urine tests that cover limited time frames.

Hair follicle testing is a game-changer in substance detection. Unlike urine tests, which have short detection windows, hair tests offer a detailed view, mapping out drug use history effectively. Their superior detection capabilities enable Prairie Grove employers to make better-informed decisions based on comprehensive substance use data.

Extended Detection Window

In Prairie Grove, IL, the extended detection window of hair follicle tests is a crucial advantage. Capable of identifying drug use as far back as 90 days, this method offers employers a thorough view of an individual's substance history. This extended range surpasses other tests, providing a comprehensive assessment of an applicant’s or employee’s past behaviors.

Hair testing's broad detection window is unmatched. In Prairie Grove, employers seeking an in-depth understanding of an individual's drug use history benefit from the method's ability to reveal substance use dating back months, a period unsurpassed by most other testing techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
