In Raleigh, Illinois, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments. If you or someone you know requires a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to, featuring locations across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Usually, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body suffices. These hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, drug testing procedures are increasingly utilizing hair follicle analyses. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair over urine assessments. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers are prime users. Hair tests stand out for their extended detection range of up to 90 days and are almost impossible to falsify. Yet, for recent drug use, urine remains the preferred test within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a long-term record by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced close to the scalp, hair provides a detection window extending up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or above 10 tests, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not accessible, the equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result typically involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical option to exclude drug use in most samples, to be court-acceptable, a positive screen mandates confirmation. Samples exhibiting a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations from hair compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation follows any positive screening results via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug use, not just the most recent instance.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although colloquially known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Raleigh, IL Hair follicle tests offer numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. In Raleigh, IL, they are favored for their superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can miss certain timeframes, hair testing provides a broader detection scope, making it harder for individuals to evade detection.

With hair testing, employers in Raleigh, IL, gain a clearer picture of an individual’s substance history. This long-lasting impact, coupled with its harder-to-manipulate nature, positions hair follicle testing ahead of urine testing in ensuring workplace safety and compliance.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Raleigh, IL One of the standout features of hair follicle tests is their prolonged detection window. In Raleigh, IL, these tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days prior, offering employers a comprehensive insight into an individual’s drug history, which urine tests simply cannot match. This extended window ensures a more detailed view.

Employers in Raleigh, IL, value this long detection period, allowing them to make informed decisions about hiring and monitoring current employees. By exposing extended periods of drug use, hair testing provides a more accurate profile than other methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
