Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ransom, Illinois. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and we've established testing centers in every city across the nation to conduct hair tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head, or alternatively body hair, for the test. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has often incorporated hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are turning to hair drug tests instead of the regular urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage of these tests is their extensive detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process that makes cheating nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture and retain biomarkers, offering an extended history of substance use within their fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection timeframe of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (close to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referencing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial steps of integrating a sample into a lab's framework. This includes ensuring the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data input in the absence of an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift preliminary scan for drugs of misuse. Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair development can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
