Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Richmond, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities in all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of your head, or body hair may suffice. Hair tests can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, the prevalence of using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has grown considerably. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists increasingly favor a hair drug test over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and those on probation often employ hair follicle tests. The main advantage of these tests is their extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision and difficult to tamper with. However, for drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. Collected near the scalp, hair can show a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Its collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This step includes checking the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for commonly abused drugs. Though a cost-saving way to disprove drug use in many samples, any positive in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples presumed positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If the Screening suggests a positive result, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair screening a more challenging procedure.

Confirmation of a positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed adhering to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage history: It offers a timeline of drug use, not merely recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing types.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Richmond, IL, hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection window, hair tests can uncover drug use over months. This is crucial in workplace scenarios, providing a thorough overview of an individual's drug use history, ensuring greater alignment with zero-tolerance policies.

Hair testing vs urine testing:

  • Extended drug detection period
  • Reduced risk of sample tampering
  • Higher accuracy and fewer false negatives
These advantages illustrate why more organizations are turning away from urine tests in favor of the dependable accuracy provided by hair follicle testing.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests is a standout feature in Richmond, IL, capturing a broader scope of substance use over a significant time frame. While traditional tests often fall short, hair tests can reveal drug use patterns up to 90 days prior, offering employers an expansive understanding of an individual's long-term substance use habits.

Key benefits

  • Insight into chronic substance use
  • Evaluates long-term compliance with drug policies
  • Supports comprehensive background checks
This reliable detection range provides peace of mind for employers, ensuring informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Richmond, IL, is a tamper-resistant method that significantly curtails the risk of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
