Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Richview, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, and our testing centers are available across all cities Nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug testing has increasingly shifted toward hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often favor hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are utilized by organizations with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and for individuals under probation. The key benefit of hair follicle testing is its longer detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process, making it difficult to falsify. Nevertheless, for identifying recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests are still considered more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains biomarkers within its fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

By taking a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) located close to the scalp, one can obtain 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for test screening and verification. For EtG and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used instead. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. All other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair, are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, involving the introduction of a sample into the lab’s system. This step confirms the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any missing entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. It is a cost-efficient way to identify drug use across numerous samples. However, a positive result needs verification to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drug traces are removed from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex technique to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is completed with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash as necessary prior to confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical use data: Hair tests unveil a pattern of drug use across a timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
