Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Ridgway, Illinois. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities in cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair screenings. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for conducting drug screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are often opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation increasingly rely on hair tests. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, and difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains biomarkers through its strands, offering a prolonged indicator of alcohol and other substances. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can indicate alcohol and drug presence for up to about a 90-day period. Gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp translates to 100mg, the optimal quantity for both preliminary screenings and verifications. For EtG, extensions, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, an equivalent mass of body hair can be utilized. Referencing head hair indicates only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates further verification for legal admissibility. Samples that are seemingly positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should Screening suggest a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive findings from the Screening phase uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as required. The entire laboratory progression, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Longer detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use over the past 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheating is difficult: Altering a hair drug test is difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: Hair tests reveal a timeline of drug use, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Higher Cost: Hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result Variations: Factors like hair color and growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
