What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The strands of growing hair capture biomarkers, offering a prolonged history of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair provides a detection window of up to 3 months for substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the hair specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential phases in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory's system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples suspected positive during Screening necessitate a second confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in Extraction. Here, substances are retrieved from hair at much lower levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Due to the difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests, the outcomes are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: This method reveals patterns of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days following drug intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: The test is commonly referred to as a "hair follicle test," though it actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Rio, IL
Hair follicle tests offer superior detection accuracy over traditional urine tests. The ability to track substance use over extended periods, combined with the reduced risk of tampering, makes it a more reliable choice. While urine tests detect recent use, they can't provide the same comprehensive insight as hair analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Rio, IL
The key advantage of hair follicle testing lies in its extensive detection window, up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance use history, offering a more accurate depiction of their lifestyle and habits over time.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Rio, IL
