Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rosewood Heights, Illinois. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is well-versed in hair testing, boasting facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting these exams. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly integrated into drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are now opting for hair over traditional urine testing. This method suits employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and probationary monitoring. Its key advantage lies in its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—with observed collection, making manipulation nearly impossible. However, urine testing remains the accurate choice for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and other narcotics by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of nearly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to ascertain the specimen’s weight is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system. This involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be confirmed for it to be legally permissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair during this stage at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positively screened samples is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that indicate presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolites concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rosewood Heights, IL, hair follicle testing has advantages over traditional urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a longer detection window, covering drug use history up to 90 days. This extensive period grants employers a broader view of an individual's drug history, offering a clearer insight into their substance use patterns and enhancing workplace safety and compliance.

Furthermore, the process employed in hair testing decreases the probability of result adulteration, establishing it as a more trustworthy and stable method. While urine testing is still preferred for detecting recent drug use, hair follicle tests remain essential for comprehensive and detailed drug history evaluation in Rosewood Heights.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests grants employers in Rosewood Heights, IL, a comprehensive overview of an employee's substance use history. This method captures drug use over a period of up to 90 days, offering clearer insights into long-term habits. Such a wide detection range aids businesses in making informed hiring or employee evaluation decisions.

Employers benefit from the comprehensive data gleaned from hair follicle tests, helping maintain a safe and drug-free workplace. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
