Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Russellville, Illinois. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair evaluations, and has testing facilities in cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair assessments. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is typically needed. Hair evaluations can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing alternatives.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has increased over standard urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair assessments. These tests are selected by entities with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The key benefit is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent substance use up to 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate three-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands of hair (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for assessments and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair may be taken. When indicating head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair refers to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises verifying the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug consumption on most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that provide a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from the hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to alter the results of a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally cost more than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
