Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sandwich, Illinois. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is supported by our nationwide network of centers capable of administering such tests. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, are used for analysis to detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent as a drug testing method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now often favor hair tests over urine tests. Such tests are crucial for those maintaining zero-tolerance policies or managing probation conditions. The distinct advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—through monitored sample collection, rendering manipulation virtually impossible. However, urine tests maintain accuracy for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers an extended historical record of substance intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, it can provide a detection window of up to roughly three months for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil), collected nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional add-ons, and/or over 10-panel screenings, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where the sample is integrated into the laboratory system. This step confirms that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry that might not be available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, positive screening results must be confirmed to stand in a court of law. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening requires further confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptively positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methods to conduct.

The Confirmation of a positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated in compliance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very difficult to falsify, enhancing their accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle tests in Sandwich, IL provide superior detection accuracy. Hair tests are less susceptible to recent substance use variances and offer a more reliable assessment of long-term drug habits. This makes them a preferable choice for thorough and reliable evaluations in various settings.

The robustness of hair testing over urine testing lies in its resistance to the common pitfalls of traditional methods. Its enhanced detection capabilities and breadth of analysis serve to give a more dependable overview of an individual's substance usage history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sandwich, IL offers an extended detection window, capturing drug use information dating back up to 90 days. This broadens the scope for employers and authorities to understand an individual's substance habits comprehensively, moving beyond the limits of shorter detection times associated with other tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
