Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saybrook, Illinois. For those seeking hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this field, with test centers located across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other client-specific testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevalent method. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor a hair drug test over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation benefit from its use. A key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, which can be up to 90 days. It is collected under direct observation, making it almost impossible to tamper with. For identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drugs use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a history of drug and alcohol use up to about a 3-month period. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample with around 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both initial testing and further verification. For tests involving EtG, additional elements, and/or panels beyond ten, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When mentioning head hair, we refer strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplementary data needed beyond the electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment is performed to detect drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive result must be verified to be accepted in judicial proceedings. Samples that are positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), posing a challenge for hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminarily positive results are cleansed preceding confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed in compliance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: It provides insight into drug usage patterns over a duration, unlike only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
