Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Sciota, Illinois. Whether you require a hair or alcohol test, our centers, located nationwide, specialize in hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Lately, drug testing methods have increasingly leaned towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by agencies with strict no-drug policies, as it provides an extended detection window of around 90 days, is collected under observation, and is hard to manipulate. However, urine tests are preferred for detecting drug use in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged overview of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Hair samples taken close to the scalp can give a detection period extending to roughly three months for both alcohol and drug exposure. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 strands of hair (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. However, for EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We advise using a jeweler's scale for weighing the hair. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Scalp hair specifically pertains to head hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the introductory handling of the sample into the lab's framework. This step verifies proper sample sealing and shipment, the assignment of a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and executes any extra data entry required that is not covered by electronic chain of custody systems.

Screening represents an initial, rapid assessment for signs of drug misuse. Screening serves as a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage from the majority of samples; however, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptively positive results from Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample return a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is withdrawn from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are harvested from the hair in lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is among the toughest methods to execute.

Confirming a positive screening outcome employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes a washing process pre-confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards, alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to compromise a hair drug test, supporting more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It identifies drug consumption trends over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: A period of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Outcome variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Sciota, IL stands out against urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities. Where urine tests might miss certain usage, hair tests provide a clearer and more comprehensive insight into substance consumption, allowing employers to see a longer drug use history.

Adding to this advantage is the reliability of hair testing in Sciota, eclipsing traditional methods. With its enhanced detection accuracy, hair testing offers robust results, advocating its broader adoption in various drug testing scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle tests in Sciota, IL is their extended detection window for drug use. Unlike other methods, hair tests can reveal drug exposure history for up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's habits.

This capability is especially valued by employers who seek thorough assessments of both applicants and current staff. By understanding an individual’s substance history over an extended period, employers get a more complete picture, aiding informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Sciota, IL significantly reduce the risk of sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to manipulation, hair tests offer a tamper-resistant method that enhances reliability and integrity of the results.

This leads to unquestionable outcomes, providing peace of mind for employers and test administrators. The enhanced reliability of hair tests ensures the authenticity of the test process and the data it generates.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
