Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing serves the Secor, Illinois area. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, their hair test expertise is accessible across all cities nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years for drug monitoring. Employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies maintaining zero-tolerance policies, as well as probation programs, benefit from hair tests’ extended up to 90-day detection, observed collection procedure, and resistance to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests still offer unmatched accuracy for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair retains a prolonged history of substance intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hairs' growing strands. When clipped near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (resembling a #2 pencil's diameter) from as close to the scalp as possible will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferable quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's preferred to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, a proportionate amount of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This involves affirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that are presumably positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other analyses (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to falsify: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Provides historical context: It offers a consumption pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug evaluating techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: As often noted as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
